Read the sermon text: John 1:19-34

Read the sermon summary: Though our passage for this Sunday is still introductory, it begins the narrative of the book of John. This larger section which goes through chapter 12 is sometimes called the Book of Signs and corresponds to verse eleven of the Prologue, “He came to his own and his own did not receive him.” In this passage, we see the content of the witness of John. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What would you say characterizes the witness of John? What contrasts do you see? What is the significance of John’s use of the passage in Isaiah to describe himself? What does John bear witness about the identity and activity of Jesus?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Behold Our God
Who has held the oceans in His hands
Who has numbered every grain of sand
Kings and nations tremble at His voice
All creation rises to rejoice
Behold our God seated on His throne
Come let us adore Him
Behold our King nothing can compare
Come let us adore Him
Who has given counsel to the Lord
Who can question any of His words
Who can teach the One who knows all things
Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds
Who has felt the nails upon His hand
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man
God eternal humbled to the grave
Jesus Savior risen now to reign
You will reign forever
Let your glory fill the earth
