Read the sermon text: Genesis 38

Read the sermon summary: Genesis 38 may seem like an odd interruption in the story we began a couple of weeks ago in chapter 37, but the author has placed it here for a reason. One of his aims is to show the sovereignty of God in fulfilling his plan despite the obstacles of human sinfulness. Judah, the prominent son of Jacob, forsakes the covenant of his fathers by having no concern for the continuation of his seed. In fact, his daughter-in-law, Tamar, is declared the more righteous one in the end. While the morality of her actions is left ambiguous, she is cast as the heroine of the story. For though Judah disregarded his responsibilities to her, she risked it all to be a part of the covenant people of God and to have a son who would extend the seed of God’s people. From one of her sons would come the house of David himself, and after that, the greater King, Jesus Christ. We learn from this episode that God will keep his promises and his plans cannot be thwarted, even by the sinful actions of his people. Yet, this fact does not excuse sin or relieve God’s people of the consequences of their sins.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise
Immortal invisible God only wise
In light inaccessible
Hid from our eyes
Most blessed most glorious
The Ancient of Days
Almighty victorious
Thy great name we praise

Unresting unhasting
And silent as light
Nor wanting nor wasting
Thou rulest in might
Thy justice like mountains
High soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains
Of goodness and love

To all life thou givest
To both great and small
In all life thou livest
The true life of all
We blossom and flourish
As leaves on the tree
And wither and perish
But naught changeth thee

Great Father of glory
Pure Father of light
Thine angels adore thee
All veiling their sight
All praise we would render
O help us to see
'Tis only the splendor
Of light hideth thee
Amen
