Read the sermon text: Genesis 40-41

Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this week, we read the story of how Joseph went from prisoner to a position of power. As we saw last week, Joseph is portrayed as a godly man, one who is determined to not sin against his master or his God. Here too, we see that God blesses Joseph in such a way that he rises to second-in-command next to Pharaoh. We have much to learn from Joseph’s example. But perhaps we ought to see God as the primary actor in this episode. After all Joseph himself testifies to Pharaoh, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer” (41:16). In fact, God blesses Joseph with faith, gifts, revelation, and wisdom so that he might be raised up to leadership for the purpose of preserving the seed of God’s people. From this passage we learn that although we can’t know what twists and turns our lives will take, we serve a promise-keeping God who will be with us and bless us on account of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O Praise the Name (Anástasis)
I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds His hands His feet
My Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone

Chorus
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death where is your sting
The angels roar for Christ the King

He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face
