Read the sermon text: John 2:1-12

Read the sermon summary: Having called his disciples, Jesus initiates his ministry by performing a miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. John tells us the purpose and result of this miracle in verse 11: “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: Do you think there is any significance to the author’s reference to the jars that were used? In what ways do you think this sign reveals the glory of Jesus? How might reading this sign in conjunction with the rest of chapter two inform our understanding of the theological message intended in this passage?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Joy To The World (Antioch)
Joy to the world the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and heav'n and nature sing

Joy to the earth the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat repeat the sounding joy

No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as far as the curse is found

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders wonders of His love
