Read the sermon text: John 10:1-21

Read the sermon summary: Following the parable of the blind man in chapter 9, Jesus continues addressing the Pharisees with more parables. He declares himself to the be the gate of the sheep and the shepherd of the sheep. This is both a rebuke to them (they are thieves and robbers) and an announcement that he is the Good Shepherd. Though the Pharisees, like their father the devil, only seek their own good, Jesus seeks the good of his flock. He lays down his life for them and he knows them intimately. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How does this passage relate to the healing of the blind man in chapter 9? What repetition do you see in these verses? What do you think it means that Jesus has “other sheep which are not of this fold” (v. 16)? What do you think it means that he knows his sheep and his sheep know him “even as the Father knows me and I know the Father”?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

He Will Hold Me Fast
When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life's fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast

Chorus
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast

Those He saves are His delight
Christ will hold me fast
Precious in His holy sight
He will hold me fast
He'll not let my soul be lost
His Promises shall last
Bought by Him at such a cost
He will hold me fast

For my life He bled and died
Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied
He will hold me fast
Raised with Him to endless life
He will hold me fast
Till our faith is turned to sight
When He comes at last
