Read the sermon text: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Read the sermon summary: In the context of the use of spiritual gifts, Paul seizes upon the real problem within the Corinthian church. The real problem isn’t that they don’t have the spiritual gifts they need. It is that they haven’t yet learned the “more excellent way,” the way of love. In poetic fashion, Paul highlights the preeminence of love. Without love our gifts and actions are worthless. But with love even the smallest of gifts and actions are of great worth. In verses 4-6 Paul personifies love and describes what it is like. And one can’t help but see how he perfectly describes our Savior, Jesus Christ. Spend some time preparing for our time together this Sunday by considering specific ways in which these verses describe him and his work for us.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

How Deep The Father's Love For Us
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts no pow’r no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
