Read the sermon text: Psalms 16 and 17

Read the sermon summary: In Pslam 16, David prays for God to preserve him because he takes refuge in him. This connects back to Psalm 2:12, "Blessed are all who take refuge in [the Messiah]." David is confident that God will answer his prayer, knowing that God will not abandon him or his people in the grave. Their hope is not ultimately that they won't see death at all, but that they will partake in resurrection. This confidence rests in the fact that God will not allow his "Holy One to undergo decay." In other words, David's hope for resurrection is bound up in the hope of the resurrection of the Promised One of God. In Psalm 17, David again prays for deliverance from his enemies. But he isn't simply hoping in a temporary solution. Rather, his hope is yet again in the resurrection when "I shall behold your face in righteousness; I will be satisfied with your likeness when I awake." Note, however, that even resurrection isn't the end goal for David. He longs for resurrection so that he can be in the presence of the Lord, seeing his face, and being satisfied in him alone. When we go through trials, we’re often tempted to hope only in changed circumstances. If our ultimate hopes rest on comfort in this life, we will despair. But if we hope in Christ, then we will endure trials with faith, waiting patiently for a resurrection like his. For then we will see him face to face and be in his presence forever.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Lord I Need You
Lord I come I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
And without You I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart

Chorus
Lord I need You oh I need You
Ev'ry hour I need You
My one defense my righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me
Where You are Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay

Lord I need You oh I need You
Ev'ry hour I need You
My one defense my righteousness
Oh God how I need You
My one defense my righteousness
Oh God how I need You
