Read the sermon text: 1 Corinthians 14:1-25

Read the sermon summary: Like many in our culture today, the Corinthians prized individualism. This led them to esteem personal expressions of spirituality over other acts of service and love. Paul corrects them by showing that any expression or act done without love is worthless. In this passage, Paul goes on to teach why the gift of prophecy should be esteemed higher than the gift of tongues. The gift of prophecy builds up the whole church, but the Corinthians had begun using tongues to puff up the individual. Paul’s big concern in this chapter is “What will build up the church?” For Christ, instead of puffing himself up with his own importance, emptied himself and laid down his life for the sake of his church. Likewise, his followers are called to empty themselves in love for the sake of others. How does individualism express itself in the American church today? How might it express itself in our own local church? In your life? What do you think is the solution to the problem of individualism in the church?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

How Deep The Father's Love For Us
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts no pow’r no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
