Read the sermon text: John 4:43-54

Read the sermon summary: This passage signals the end of one section of the book of John. We are still in what scholars have called “The Book of Signs.” But the author’s reference back to the miracle of turning water into wine signals a transition. The first section is the Prologue and the gathering of Jesus’ disciples (1:1-51). The second section contains Jesus’ teachings, miracles, and the people’s responses to him (1:19-4:54). In the next section, Jesus will continue to work signs and teach about himself, but we will note the growing hostility between him and the Jews. Two main themes in this passage are ones we have seen already: genuine faith and Jesus as the giver of life. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What are some options of making sense of verses 43-45, which on the surface may seem contradictory? What repetition do you see in this passage, particularly related to the son of the royal official? Notice that the official is said to have believed twice (50, 53). What do you make of this?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

You Alone Can Rescue
Who O Lord could save themselves
Their own soul could heal
Our shame was deeper than the sea
Your grace is deeper still

Chorus
And You alone can rescue
You alone can save
You alone can lift us from the grave
You came down to find us led us out of death
To You alone belongs the highest praise

You O Lord have made a way
The great divide You healed
For when our hearts were far away
Your love went further still
Yes Your love goes further still

And You alone can rescue
You alone can save
You alone can lift us from the grave
You came down to find us led us out of death
To You alone belongs the highest praise
To You alone belongs the highest praise
You alone

We lift up our eyes
Lift up our eyes
You're the giver of life
We lift up our eyes
Lift up our eyes
You're the giver of life
