Read the sermon text: Ecclesiastes 12:9-14

Read the sermon summary: The book of Ecclesiastes can be very confusing. There are different views on who wrote the book, the identity of the Teacher, and how one should understand the teachings contained in the book. Is this just like other wisdom literature? Is everything meaningless, as the Teacher says? This Sunday we will consider the entire book of Ecclesiastes, giving special attention to the last six verses. For it is in these verses that the author gives his appraisal of the wisdom of the Teacher and the main message of the book. Although the author appreciates the Teacher, he also cautions the reader about the limits of human wisdom. The author concludes with a command: Fear God and keep his commandments. Greater than devotion to wisdom is devotion to God and submission to his will. What cautions should we take from this book? What applications? How might this book point us to Christ?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Be Thou My Vision (Slane)
Be Thou my vision
O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me
Save that Thou art
Thou my best thought
By day or by night
Waking or sleeping
Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom
Be Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee
And Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father
I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling
And I with Thee one

Be Thou my shield
And my sword for the fight
Be Thou my dignity
Be Thou my might
Thou my soul's shelter
And Thou my high tow'r
Raise Thou me heav'nward
O pow'r of my pow'r

Riches I heed not
Nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance
Now and always
Thou and Thou only
Be first in my heart
High King of heaven
My treasure Thou art

High King of heaven
When vict'ry is won
May I reach heaven's joys
O bright heaven's Sun
Heart of my own heart
Whatever befall
Still be my vision
O Ruler of all
