Read the sermon text: Ruth 1:1-22

Read the sermon summary: The story in the book of Ruth begins with famine and death, but quickly turns to faint hope as Naomi hears “the Lord had visited his people and given them food.” She plans to return to the land of Judah alone, but her widowed daughter-in-law, Ruth, courageously insists she will go with her: “Where you go I will go, where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried.” She forsakes Moab and clings to the Lord. When Naomi and Ruth arrive in Bethlehem the whole town is excited, but Naomi is bitter and empty. She has lost all hope because the Almighty has brought calamity on her. We’re left, momentarily, with a tension. Naomi prayed that the Lord might show lovingkindness to Ruth and give her rest in the house of her husband. But Naomi’s own experience has been nothing but bitterness and emptiness at the hand of the Almighty. Will she be left in her bitterness and emptiness? Or will the Almighty visit her as he has visited his people and given them food?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

He Will Hold Me Fast
When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life's fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast

Chorus
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast

Those He saves are His delight
Christ will hold me fast
Precious in His holy sight
He will hold me fast
He'll not let my soul be lost
His Promises shall last
Bought by Him at such a cost
He will hold me fast

For my life He bled and died
Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied
He will hold me fast
Raised with Him to endless life
He will hold me fast
Till our faith is turned to sight
When He comes at last
