Read the sermon text: Genesis 39

Read the sermon summary: According to the Bible scholar and pastor Dale Ralph Davis, the keynote of Genesis 39 is the presence of the Lord with Joseph. The covenant God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has promised to be with his people. In this chapter, we see that God keeps this promise to Joseph in various circumstances. He is not only present with Joseph, but he also blesses him and gives him favor with those in charge over him. But how can we be included in this promise? How can we be sure that God will be present with us? Will God’s presence with us mean that we will always be successful according worldly measurements? How is God’s presence with Joseph applicable to all God’s people? How might it differ?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O God Our Help in Ages Past
O God our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Our shelter from the stormy blast
And our eternal home

Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure
Sufficient is Thine arm alone
And our defense is sure

Before the hills in order stood
Or earth received her frame
From everlasting Thou art God
To endless years the same

Our God our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Be Thou our guard while troubles last
And our eternal home
