Read the sermon text: John 5:19-30

Read the sermon summary: In our passage from last Sunday, we saw the first instance of open hostility by the Jewish leaders toward Jesus. They began to persecute him and sought to kill him because he was working miracles on the Sabbath and claiming a unique relationship to God, making himself equal with God. In verses 19-47 of chapter 6, Jesus defends his ministry. There are two parts of this discourse. The Son is not acting in discordance with the Father, but actually in full cooperation (19-30) and he’s not simply giving witness to himself. There are other witnesses who testify that he is who he claims to be, including John, his on works, the Father himself, the Scriptures, and Moses testify to Jesus (31-47). Thus, the Jewish leaders are left without excuse for not believe in him. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How does Jesus describe the cooperation between the Father and Son? What similarities are there between verses 24-25 and verses 28-29? What differences? What does this teaching of Jesus mean for the present reality of those who trust in him? What does it mean for their future? What about those who do not trust in him?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Holy (Jesus You Are)
What heart could hold the weight of Your love
And know the heights of Your great worth
What eyes could look on Your glorious face
Shining like the sun

Chorus
You are holy holy holy
God most high and God most worthy
You are holy holy holy
Jesus You are Jesus You are
(Jesus You are Jesus You are)

Your name alone has pow'r to raise us
Your light will shine when all else fades
Our eyes will look on Your glorious face
Shining like the sun
Who is like You God

Who shall we say You are
You're the living God
Who shall we say You are
You're the Great I Am
The highest name of all
You're all You say You are

And You will come again in glory
To judge the living and the dead
All eyes will look on Your glorious face
Shining like the sun
Who is like You God
