Read the sermon text: John 1:6-13

Read the sermon summary: This Sunday we will continue through the introduction (also called prologue) of John’s gospel account. Last time we saw that this book is not disconnected from the rest of Scriptures. On the contrary, John is showing how his book is about the promises of God from the Old Testament. The author is introducing the One who had been foretold, who would defeat God’s enemies and rule as King over a faithful people. In preparation for the sermon, read the passage and consider the following questions (it may be helpful to write down your reflections on paper): How does John continue making connections back to the Old Testament scriptures? What contrasts do you see in these verses? What observations can you make about the people described in verse 13?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O Great God
O great God of highest heav'n
Occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
Conquer ev'ry rebel pow'r
Let no vice or sin remain
That resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
Make me Yours forever more
I was blinded by my sin
Had no ears to hear Your voice
Did not know Your love within
Had no taste for heaven's joys
Then Your Spirit gave me life
Opened up Your word to me
Through the gospel of Your Son
Gave me endless hope and peace
Help me now to live a life
That's dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
From the evils that I face
You are worthy to be praised
With my ev'ry thought and deed
O great God of highest heav'n
Glorify Your Name through me
